The tank's most accurate model and its best-calibrated one: 44 of 64, with an average confidence of 68.5% against an actual hit rate of 68.8% — a gap of three tenths of a point, an order of magnitude tighter than anyone else. It also posted the best Brier score in the field (0.495) and the joint-best knockout record (10 of 12), and picked Spain in the Final at 56%. No contrarian heroics and no blow-ups — just right slightly more often than the rest, and honest about how sure it was.
The AI Octopus
Twelve minds. One tank. Every World Cup 2026 game.
We asked twelve leading AI models to call the 2026 World Cup — their picks, reasoning and confidence, published before each kick-off and never edited after. Spain beat Argentina 1–0 to lift the trophy. The tank's full record is below.

The final report
How twelve models actually did across a whole World Cup.
Every prediction on this page was published before its kick-off and never touched afterwards, so this is a clean scoreboard rather than a reconstruction. The tank called 64 of the tournament's 104 games — the ones inside the rolling prediction window — and each model was scored on the outcome it picked (home, draw or away) against the official FIFA result.
Nobody beat the bookmakers
Across every priced game, all twelve models backed the market favourite almost every single time — between 53 and 57 of the 57 games the books priced. Across all twelve models there were just 17 contrarian calls all tournament, and they went 1-for-17. The tank did not out-read the market; it re-stated the market in prose, with a confidence number attached.
Draws are the blind spot
Sixteen of the 64 games the tank called ended level. Fourteen of those went unpredicted by every single model. The only exceptions were Algeria 3–3 Austria, where eleven of twelve smelled a shoot-out, and Colombia 0–0 Portugal, which Llama alone called. A model that never says "draw" caps itself at roughly 75% before it starts.
Knockouts were easier than groups
The tank averaged 63.5% in the group stage and 73.4% once the bracket started — favourites hold up better when there is no draw to lose points to and the gap in quality is wider. Nine of the twelve knockout ties went the way the tank's majority called them.
Confidence mostly meant nothing
Ten of the twelve models were overconfident, several badly. DeepSeek averaged 76.8% confidence and hit 64.1%. Only ChatGPT finished within a point of its own stated confidence — it was both the most accurate model and the only honest one about how sure it was.
The consensus was safe, not smart
The Octopus finished on 43 of 64, level with three of its members and behind ChatGPT. Averaging twelve highly correlated opinions removed the worst calls but produced no edge — when the tank was wrong it was usually wrong together, most spectacularly in the bronze final.
The tournament's worst moment
All twelve models picked France in the third-place play-off, at confidences from 58% up to Perplexity's 74%. England won 6–4 in the highest-scoring third-place match ever played. A unanimous, confident, collectively wrong call is exactly the failure mode a consensus of similar models produces.
Twelve frontier models, one tournament, and a top score of 68.8%. That is a little better than always picking the favourite and a lot worse than the confidence numbers implied. The interesting result is not the leaderboard order — the models finished within eight points of each other — but how similar they all were: same picks, same blind spot, same unanimous mistake.
Model by model
A full scorecard for each of the 12 models and the Octopus. Every figure is computed from the picks published on this page before kick-off.
The consensus finished on 43 of 64 — level with Gemini, Llama and Mistral, ahead of eight of its twelve members, and behind ChatGPT. That is the honest result for averaging a set of highly correlated opinions: it filed off the worst individual calls without generating an edge of its own. It got the Final right (Spain, 63%) and was dragged into the tank's unanimous, confident, wrong France pick in the bronze final.
Joint second on 43 of 64, and the only model that never once broke from the Octopus — 64 games, 64 agreements, zero minority calls. Its lower confidence numbers also made it one of only two models to finish under-confident rather than over, undershooting its own accuracy by nearly two points. Called Spain in the Final at a modest 55%, which proved the right read of a genuinely tight game.
Joint second on 43 of 64, and the most genuinely independent model in the tank: four calls against the tank majority, two of which landed — including Colombia 0–0 Portugal, the one drawn game in the whole tournament that no other model saw coming. It also strung together the longest correct run of the World Cup at nine games, and it was the only model to call more than one draw correctly. The blemish is the Final, where it backed Argentina at 65%.
Joint second on 43 of 64 and easily the best of the high-confidence models: it put 42 of its 64 calls above 70% and still converted 30 of them, which is why its Brier score (0.503) is far healthier than the other loud voices in the tank. Called Spain in the Final at 65%. The one thing it almost never did was hedge — a single draw call in 64 games, in a tournament that produced sixteen of them.
42 of 64 and a comfortable middle-of-the-table finish. Its group stage was as good as anybody's — 34 of 52, matching the best in the tank — but the bracket undid it: 8 of 12 in the knockouts, and it ended the tournament on the wrong side of both the bronze final and the Final itself, having picked Argentina at 58%.
42 of 64 and mid-table, with a near seven-point confidence gap and one of the weaker Brier scores in the tank. It read the Final correctly, taking Spain at 58%, but it also owns the single worst call of the closing weekend: France to beat England in the third-place play-off at 74% confidence — the most emphatic wrong pick in a game England won 6–4.
The only model that did not complete the set — 62 usable picks out of 64, with two calls coming back empty. On the games it did answer it was strong: 41 correct at 66.1%, a better strike rate than seven models that answered more games, and a Brier score of 0.500 bettered by no model except ChatGPT. Its weakness was total draw blindness — one draw call all tournament, and it was wrong. Took Spain in the Final at 58%.
The most reserved voice in the tank — an average confidence of 65.8% and only 19 calls above 70%, fewer bold bets than any other model. That restraint kept it honest: its stated confidence overshot its actual hit rate by less than two points, second best in the field. It finished mid-table on raw accuracy, hurt by the same group-stage draws that caught everyone. It read the Final as a coin flip and called it 52% Argentina — wrong, but the one model that admitted it did not really know.
By some distance the most confident model here — 76.8% average confidence against 64.1% accuracy, a 12.7-point gap, with 45 of its 64 calls placed above 70%. It was also the most contrarian: five picks against the tank majority and four against the betting market, which between them produced exactly one correct call. And yet it went 10 of 12 in the knockouts, joint best in the field, and made the boldest correct call of the tournament — Spain to lift the trophy, at 85%.
A mid-table 41 of 64, delivered with rather more certainty than the results justified — 71.2% average confidence against 64.1% accuracy, a seven-point gap and the third-worst Brier score in the tank. It went 8 of 12 in the knockouts and backed Argentina in the Final at 65%, one of the more emphatic wrong calls on a night when Argentina did not manage a single shot on target.
40 of 63 puts it near the foot of a very tight table, though its confidence discipline was better than most — a 3.8-point gap, comfortably under the field average. Where it mattered it was sharp: it backed Spain in the Final at 64% on the strength of their defensive record, which is about as close as any model came to describing a final in which Argentina managed no shots on target at all.
The tank's weakest record at 39 of 64, dragged down by a 60% group stage and the worst Brier score in the field (0.550). It was one of the more willing draw-callers — four attempts, one hit — which is the right instinct poorly aimed, and it carried a near seven-point confidence gap throughout. Its redemption came last: it called Spain in the Final at 65%, finishing on the correct side of the only game most people will remember.
